Josh Paul of Daughtry discusses his Clinic at Replay Guitar Exchange and Daughtry

It’s rare to find a bassist with a distinctive style who can stand independently and be involved with a band. But Josh Paul is a perfect example of a bassist with this versatility. His funk background is easily recognizable in his playing, while his playing style is adaptable to any genre.

Josh Paul’s musical background is actually in drumming. His first exposure came when he was only a child, appearing in the music video for Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer.” As he got older, he switched to bass. As a teenager, Josh started playing in notorious bands such as Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves. From there, Josh started playing with a wide variety of musicians and bands. He has been a member of Daughtry ever since 2006, with the exception of taking a year off in 2012.

On July 31, Josh Paul did a clinic at Tampa’s Replay Guitar Exchange. He was joined by Daughtry drummer Brandon Maclin, who jammed along with Josh. The duo played mostly improv funk-inspired jams — footage is featured in the interview.

In the interview, Josh discusses the clinic, his background as a musician, and what he and Daughtry are currently working on.

My name is Stephanie Jensen. I started my career as a music journalist five years ago. I had the idea for Infernal TV when I realized I desired more creative direction. I enjoyed working with video, so I decided to create a video-based website for metal bands.
