Tommy Giles of Between the Buried and Me Discusses Automata Parts I and II

It should be no mistake that Between the Buried and Me are legends. Ever since the beginning of the century, BTBAM has been innovators of their genre. They’re all amazing and talented musicians. But what stands BTBAM out the most is how every album sounds different and the band tries to find ways to reinvent themselves.

This new BTBAM album is definitely different from the rest of the discography. BTBAM has always been known for their technical playing and odd time signatures. But Automata sounds minimalist compared to rest of the discography. When some sounds are melodic, the whole song is melodic. When some songs are metal, the whole song is metal. It’s refreshing to see BTBAM settle down and still write great music.

While I really like Automata Part I, I’m honestly really excited for Part II. Part I was a little subtle for me; while I appreciate BTBAM diversifying their sound, I’m one for the heavier stuff. In the interview, Tommy said Part II is a lot more experimental. I think I will really enjoy Part II!

Overall, BTBAM will continue reinventing themselves and will continue being legendary. I’m just excited to see them in Orlando on March 23! Only way I can truly judge new music is when I see it live!
I was able to speak to vocalist/keyboardist Tommy Giles. In the interview, he discusses the tour, Automata Part I and Automata Part II.
