Sven Dirkschneider Discusses the New U.D.O. Album
You can’t say heavy metal legend without mentioning Udo Dirkschneider. This man has one of the most iconic voices in metal and his reign with Accept will always live on in heavy metal history. But Udo truly made his legacy with his own band U.D.O. And for the past couple of years, Udo and his band in U.D.O. formed Dirkschneider, where they played Accept classics and never-before-played Accept songs.
This was this show I witnessed at The Orpheum on April 1. Everyone at the venue moved to the front as Udo and his troupe played all of the Accept fan favorites. It was cool hearing singles such as “Balls to the Wall,” songs I never expected to hear play live by Udo himself.
At 66 years old, Udo is killing it way better than most younger musicians. He had plenty of energy, held amazing presence, and sounded perfect for the entire hour and a half they performed. I can’t even imagine he can do this every night.
But I can’t give Udo all of the credit. There’s a reason why he chose his musicians for his band. While most people may think his son, Sven Dirkschneider, had an easy in, you can tell Sven has busted his butt for many years trying to become the best drummer he can be. I also can’t forget to mention the dueling guitarists, Bill Hudson and Andrey Smirnov.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Sven. In the interview we discuss playing Accept songs for the last time, the new record, and what they will be performing after the Accept songs.
