Flotsam and Jetsam Discuss New Music
You can’t say thrash metal legends without Flotsam and Jetsam. These guys have been around for decades, entrancing metal fans with their signature thrash sound. Even though they emerged during a popular period in metal, they always remained underground. Flotsam and Jetsam’s devotion to the underground is what keeps fans supporting this band.
I watched Flotsam and Jetsam at the Crowbar on May 16. It was my second time seeing them and they’re honestly one of the best live bands. The first time I saw them back in 2016, I was blown away by how perfect they sounded. I enjoyed their set much more this last time. The energy was there, the band sounded awesome, and they performed all songs perfectly.
When I saw them in 2016, I bought their self-titled vinyl and have listened to it pretty heavily. But lately, I’ve been listening to older stuff, such as the Doomsday for the Deceiver album. Toward the end of this year, Flotsam and Jetsam will release their new album. In the interview, vocalist Eric A.K. Knutson said they sound like a combination of all of their albums. I like how polished and tight new material is, but I hope they bring back some of the aggression from the early days.
I was able to speak to Knutson and guitarist Michael Gilbert. In the interview they discuss the Hammerfall tour, new music, and why they love thrash metal.
