Perturbator and GosT Tour 2019 Show Review: What an Energetic and Captivating Show

On May 19, synthwave gargatuans Perturbator and GosT came to Tampa. Me being a major fan of horror scores fell in love with both acts years ago. This wasn’t my first time seeing Perturbator live but it was my first time seeing Gost live, and I was pumped!

Let’s start with the opening act. Moondragon is a one-man synthwave act based in Orlando. Led by Troy Simpson, his sound is more reminiscent of old-school video games than the heavy darkwave material that I prefer. He has a lot of skill, but his set was a little slow. I did appreciate his vivid imagery on the screen behind him; reminded me of old-school graphics from the VHS and early video game days. He also helped amplify the crowd for what was to come next.

And up next was the act that so many people came to see, including myself. GosT! Immediately, the synthwave master, along with a bassist, headed on stage and the crowd erupted. Their set started out intense and they even played one of my favorite songs, “Cursed.” They played with so much force — it truly was intoxicating. From there, the set got a little slow. They played a few songs from the Possessor album, which honestly isn’t my favorite album. Even though his setlist wasn’t one I would have chosen, GosT had lots of vigorous energy and made several fans happy. After the band got off stage, all I could hear were fans begging them to play more songs!

But GosT exited with intent — so Perturbator could take the stage! And fans were not opposed to that. So this makes sense, I saw Perturbator when he came to the U.S. a few years ago. But this time around, he had my full attention. When I first saw him, his set was amazing, but his stage presence was pretty calm. This all changed when I saw him last week. Perturbator was headbanging and compelling the crowd, even though he didn’t speak at all. I will say, I preferred his setlist the first time I saw him. Then again, he recently released The Uncanny Valley and practically played that whole album. But he did play some of my favorite songs such as “Neo Tokyo.”

Overall, this show blew away all of my expectations. I was excited to see Perturbator but mainly looked forward to seeing GosT. While I loved GosT’s set, I re-fell in love with Perturbator’s energetic and captivating set.

I’m looking forward to experiencing the future of both artists and to see how many more synthwave acts they influence.
