Virvum Discusses the Tech Trek IV Tour and New Music

These days, it’s hard to stand out in extreme metal. But Virvum did just that. They combine mindblowing talent with a signature brutality that keeps you on edge with each track.

Virvum formed in 2007 but didn’t release their debut album Illuminance until 2016. Their secret lies in their writing process; instead of using whatever discarded riffs to write songs, they take their each time composing each song. The result is an album that’s nothing short of a masterpiece.

Illuminance changes everything we know about modern death metal. The “Illuminance” title track is a 9 minute long labyrinth of crazy riffs, heavy bass, and expert drumming. It weaves in and out of ravaging insanity to beauteous harmonies that will captivate you. Compare that to a song such as “Ad Rigorem” which cuts straight to chase — it’s fast, aggressive, and brutal. Every member of this band performans phenomenally on this whole album;  you hear Bryan Berger’s roaring vocals united with serpentine bass lines from Arran McSporran, genius guitar work from Nic Gruhn and Groftoby Koelman, ad vigorous drumming from Diego Morenzoni.

When I saw Virvum at The Haven in Orlando, it was my first time seeing them live and I had no idea what to expect. Even with their more mellow death metal sound, they still performed one of the liveliest sets of the night and they attracted a huge crowd.

I was able to speak to Gruhn and McSporran while they were on the Tech Trek IV tour in Orlando. In the interview, they discuss how they’re unique from the rest of the bands on the tour and what they can say about new music.

My name is Stephanie Jensen. I started my career as a music journalist five years ago. I had the idea for Infernal TV when I realized I desired more creative direction. I enjoyed working with video, so I decided to create a video-based website for metal bands.
