Dead City Crown – Our Blood Apocalyptic (Review)
On June 5, Dead City Crown will release their newest EP, “Our Blood Apocalyptic.” What I like about this band is how they have diverse influences. They say their sound is influenced by Scandinavian metal bands, but I can hear even more influences. The melodies are more similar to some power metal bands and I can tell their vocalist gained inspiration from pioneering death metal vocalists such as Chris Barnes or Frank Mullen.
One of the best aspects about the new EP is the addition of keyboardist Kyle Morrison. Compared to previous material, the keyboards give this EP a more dynamic sound. You can definitely hear this in the first song, “Until the Bitter End.” The catchy piano melodies provoke the listener but the growling vocals add that bite of aggression. There’s also an exceptional guitar solo that takes this song to a whole new level.
The EP continues shredding with the title track, “Our Blood Apocalyptic.” For a title track, I honestly expected this to be stronger than what it was — but maybe it’s because the first song was absolutely genius. But this song is still distinctive and has some good parts.
The song “Through the Ashes of Man” bored me. It sounds the same throughout and it has no oomph. But everyone in the band is very talented and it’s normal to have a filler track or two.
Things pick up with “In Revolt.” The melodic keyboard intro pulls you in and vocalist Carl Conquest’s roar takes this song to a different dimension of heavy. This song has a lot of force and it’s definitely one of the best on the EP.
The EP ends with one of the most entertaining tracks, “Autumn’s May.” Rapid drumming and guitars mix with beautiful keyword synths, keeping the listener engaged throughout the entire song.
Dead City Crown have released several EPs, but “Our Blood Apocalyptic” is probably one of their better ones. The addition of Kyle Morrison on keyboards made the band’s sound more dynamic and versatile. Overall, this band has a lot of potential and I can’t wait for them to release a full-length.
