Napalm Death – “Resentment Is Always Seismic” Review: “… it’s a unique mix-up that I’m sure will interest Napalm Death fans.”
Man, Napalm Death never takes a break. They have been consistent ever since they emerged in the early 80s. For the most part, I always liked their whole discography. Some of their new albums are pretty weak, but I love their newest album Throes in the Jaws of Defeatism. That’s why I was excited when I was Napalm Death was releasing a new EP! While some songs are classics, others are pretty weak. There are quite a few covers here I also think fans may enjoy, though I think the EP would be better without them.
The mini-album opens with “Narcissus.” It’s a classic grind song and an ode to Napalm Death’s discography. While I think it mirrors their previous album Throes well, it definitely doesn’t hold the same strength. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad song. We still get the crazy energy and Barney Greenway’s iconic raspy vocals here.
The other originals here are so-so. Some are weak while some are really powerful.
“Resentment Always Simmers” is an example of a weak song. It starts with a slow chant, which is a little odd for Napalm Death. The rest of the song is a little slow. I’m sure fans will like this switch-up, though I didn’t care much for it.
“By Proxy” is a lot better. It holds a ton of energy throughout the entire track. “Man Bites Dogged” is another wild song that follows the same momentum as “By Proxy.” “Slaver Through a Repeat Performance” is a different song, but the dynamism here works. It’s still insane; I can see Barney doing the dashing thing he does on stage while performing this track. It starts off slow and the chorus is a little weak compared to other Napalm Death songs, but overall it’s a solid track.
Napalm Death features a couple of covers here: “People Pie” (Slab! Cover), “Don’t Need It” (Bad Brains cover), and the title track was done in the style of Shane Emury’s other band Dark Sky Burial. It helps give the EP life and some versatility. Do I think the EP would be better without these covers? Absolutely. Then again, I could be biased because I’m not the biggest fan of covers in general.
This EP is okay. Some songs, like “By Proxy,” are great. Others, like “Resentment Against Sinners,” are meh. I also think the album would be better without the covers. Overall, it’s a unique mix-up that I’m sure will interest Napalm Death fans.
