Goatwhore “Angels Hung From the Arches of Heaven” Review: “Goatwhore can never release a bad album.”

I interviewed Goatwhore singer Ben Falgoust at Mass Destruction Festival in 2021. I asked him about the album, and he did say the events of the past couple of years influenced a small change in the band. You can definitely hear these changes in their new album, Angels Hung From the Arches of Heaven. However, they still stay true to their sound, and this is another successful album in the books.

One thing you have to say about Goatwhore is they have stayed true to their sound ever since their inception, but they do change little things here and there with every album. With this one, I hear more melody. Let’s take the song “The Bestowal of Abomination” as an example. While the song is malevolent, there are some melodic and catchy guitar parts. These hooks get stuck in your head. So far, this has been the song I’ve listened to the most.

But Goatwhore didn’t undergo this change for every song. “Ruinous Liturgy” is one of the evilest sounding songs on the album. This is the Goatwhore I know; the dark-sounding atmosphere, the heavy drumming, and electrifying guitar parts.

I’m not fond of every song on here, such as “Weight of a Soulless Heart.” The rhythm in this song is a little off, and the song sounds completely unorganized. I’m not sure if the band had a lot of ideas for this song, and it didn’t work out or what.

But Goatwhore makes up for this with the last song, “And I Was Delivered From the Wound of Perdition.” The beginning starts off with an acoustic guitar melody and background synthy vocals that remind me of the score to The Amityville Horror. From then, the song emerges with a heavy and hard-hitting intro. This ruthless trend continues into the next half of the song until the guitar solo bashes you in the head. At about six minutes, this track is longer than most Goatwhore songs. I do wish there was more versatility here, but this is still a solid song.

Goatwhore did change up a couple of things with this new album. There are some songs I really like and others that I think are less than perfect. However, Goatwhore can never release a bad album, and this is another solid record in their discography.
