James Rivera of Helstar Discusses The Devil’s Masquerade
Helstar is a legendary band for many reasons. They’re one of the earliest heavy metal bands to come out of Texas. They redefined heavy metal, proving that technical musicianship belongs in the genre. And many fans have come to know vocalist James Rivera as a vampire.
But with the band’s latest release, The Devil’s Masquerade, Helstar has reinvented themselves again. They did everything bigger with this album: epic choirs, goth-inspired anthems, and a heaviness we haven’t heard from the band in years. New guitar player Alan DeLeon, Jr. shows off his guitar prowess with jaw-dropping solos. They finish the album with “I Am the Way,” which features an ensemble of the most legendary singers in Texas— Solitude Aeturnus’ Rob Lowe, Watchtower’s Jason McMaster, Necrofier’s Christian Larson, Crimson Glory’s Travis Willis, and many more.
I was able to speak to Rivera about writing The Devil’s Masquerade, how he came up with the concept of the “I Am the Way” song, and their upcoming Texas shows and European tour.
