Leishmaniasis Discusses Florida Shows and New Music

Very few bands contain the brutality that will knock you off your feet and strip the flesh from your bones. Leishmaniasis is one of them.

Leishmaniasis is a legendary death metal band from Colombia, famous for their gory lyrics and crazy stage presence. They formed in 1992 and have three full-lengths, with their newest being Chronicles of Her Atrocious Rotten-Obsessed Mind.

I saw Leishmaniasis at Tampa Deathfest, and was blown away. They were by far the most murderous band of the day, and I loved their horror-themed masks. I wasn’t the only one who agreed; the entire crowd was moshing, headbanging, and overall super energetic. Leishmaniasis got a massive welcome in Tampa, and I think I speak for everyone that we hope they will come back soon!

I spoke to guitarist Luis Osorio of Leishmaniasis. In the interview, we discussed their recent Florida shows and what they can say about new music.

1. You recently played at Tampa Deathfest at the Brass Mug. Discuss the show. Was it Leishmaniasis’ first time playing in Tampa?

The show went great! The crowd responded very positively, lots of moshing! And the sound was excellent as usual. We were a bit nervous about headlining because we’ve seen it before, people leaving early when the headliner is not a famous band. But fortunately, that was not the case.

Also, this was our 2nd time playing in Tampa; we played in December 2021 for the Chuck Schuldiner tribute shows at the Brass Mug.

2. You also played in Miami. How was that show?

Went very well too, great turnout, we played at Las Rosas, which had been closed since the pandemic, and people are just very happy to see venues coming back.

3. While at the show, I noticed you all wear masks on stage. Is there a story behind the masks? Are you guys acting out characters?

The masks became part of the band’s performance some time ago. They’re a way for us to maintain an identity as a band, not associated with specific people or names. They also help us stay recognizable to the audience, which is important for an independent band. We don’t portray characters or roles, but we do want the design of each mask to evolve over time, so we refresh them every couple of years.

4. Discuss the lyric video for “Kill the Pig.”

“Kill the Pig” is one of the most popular tracks from our latest album, Chronicles of Her Atrocious Rotten-Obsessed Mind. Its lyrics are an analogy portraying the hatred our killer (the central character of the album) feels for a particular person. The video was produced by Mutilated Records, the label that released the album. We used the album artwork, which is based on our killer, combining it with some animations for greater impact. The artwork was created by Miguel Bautista, a renowned artist from Bogotá.

5. I know you live in Miami. Does the rest of the band live in Colombia? Does the distance make it difficult to write music and tour?

Correct, I live in Miami, Hugo (bass) lives in Madrid, Andres (vocals) and Alejandro (drums) live in Bogota, and it totally makes it more challenging. Fortunately, it is very easy to make home demos; we just upload ideas to Google Drive and take it from there, but the process is definitely slower.

6. What can you say about new music?

It’s coming along really nicely! We’re almost finished writing the new album, and we’re scheduled to record in January/February, so hopefully it will be all ready mixed, mastered, and pressed by late April. Expect true brutality!

7. Feel free to say anything you want!

My name is Stephanie Jensen. I started my career as a music journalist five years ago. I had the idea for Infernal TV when I realized I desired more creative direction. I enjoyed working with video, so I decided to create a video-based website for metal bands.
