Lorna Shore “…And I Return to Nothingness” Review: Many Lorna Shore Fans Will Still Be Shocked

Lorna Shore had a big couple of years. In late 2019, they fired their former singer CJ McCreery and brought in Will Ramos in early 2020. In that amount of time, Lorna Shore was writing this annihilating EP. They emerged out of the woodwork with their single “To the Hellfire,” that received mass attention and hype. But many Lorna Shore fans will still be shocked by the new EP, “…And I Return to Nothingness.”

The EP starts off with Lorna Shore’s newest single, “To the Hellfire.” They don’t hesitate with this EP and it’s already off to an insane start. I have to say, Will Ramos is one of the craziest vocalists I’ve ever heard. He unleashes his diverse vocals, going between screechy highs and brutal lows like it’s nothing. In this track alone, you can also hear the diversity of Lorna Shore’s playing. This track includes one of the best solos I’ve heard from them as well as a crazy breakdown. This song is pure destruction and I expect nothing less from Lorna Shore.

The craziness continues with the next track, “Of the Abyss.” However, this song doesn’t offer the pure insanity that “To the Hellfire” delivered. This track features lots of operatic background vocals. The song isn’t as heavy, but there are some brutal parts. For example, a crazy breakdown comes out of nowhere. Ramos unleashes his most inhuman vocals yet and the brutality of the breakdown is almost brutal. Then, it suddenly cuts back into the melodic chorus.

The third and final song is the title track. This one is a little bizarre for a Lorna Shore song. You hear some folk-like keys in the background of the pure insanity that this band delivers. You hear these keyboards and synths in the background throughout the beginning of the song. Sometimes, that diversity is cool, but here it sounds out of place. I was kind of hoping something crazy would suddenly happen, like an insane breakdown, but the song is pretty shocking. It’s not a bad song at all, but it’s not a good song to finish the album. “Of the Abyss” would have been a better ending song.

Overall, the EP features super killer songs. Fans already experienced the decimation known as “To the Hellfire” but they will soon be demolished by “Of the Abyss.” I would like the last song more if it wasn’t, well, the last song. It was a weird way to end the album. Otherwise, I definitely see this being one of the most successful releases this year.
